Ashen future, even if we box clever

27/3/2016

You may have read a recent report published in the Journal of Ecology that the future of the Ash Tree in Europe, including Britain is bleak, with a fungus causing ash dieback or Calara, doing to the Ash Tree what Dutch Elm disease did to Elm.
Ash Dieback is caused by the fungus Hymenoscyphus fraxineus, which first destroys the leaves followed by branches, trunk, and finally the entire tree.
First discovered in 2012 as a result of imported infected trees it is now in Suffolk and Norfolk to south Wales.
There are disease resistant cultivars that resist ash dieback but can do nothing to resist the following.
In Europe a second more deadly assailant on the trees is the Emerald Ash Borer,a green beetle whose larvae bore into the wood, killing the trees.
It has not reached Britain yet but is moving eastwards from Russia at 25 miles per year, having now reached Sweden, meaning it is only a matter of time before we can expect the beetle over here.
The Ash is second only to Oak in numbers with over 2 million trees in and around cities, let alone how many are in woodland, so the demise of the Ash will have a major impact on biodiversity which is why I decided to have a quick look to try to ascertain how the situation would affect our butterflies and moths and was surprised by results.
With only about 700 species on the website I was surprised to find that only one moth relies entirely on Ash and that is the Centre-barred Sallow with Pseudargyrotoza conwagana larva feeding on Ash and European Barberry.
What can’t be checked are the numbers of moths whose larvae feed on Ash (23) and other plants, when the other plants don’t grow close to the Ash.

It would seem ironic as I look across the road from the cattle grid at Odiham Common at a single Ash tree with a row of Elms in the background that if the Ash tree goes I will have a clearer view of dying Elms.

Whatever the final result on biodiversity the thought of such a loss to our countryside is affecting me already.

Another story to hit the headlines this week is about a moth that is native to East Asia,China,Japan and republic of Korea, which has recently become established in mainland Europe.
The box tree moth Cydalima perpectalis first arrived in parts of England in 2008 at a commercial nursery before being recorded for the first time in a private garden in southeast England in 2011.
The 40mm wingspan moth deposits overlapping sheets of pale yellow eggs on the underside of box leaves with the resultant early stage larvae feeding on the underside of the leaves of Box (Buxus) leaving the upper epidermis intact. Later instars completely defoliate the leaves beneath a silken web clearly disfiguring any hedging or topiary, which is popular with this plant.
The moth was originally recorded in London but has now spread across south east England

As such the Royal Horticultural Society has nominated this moth as “top pest” for the first time above slugs and snails, which usually claim this spot. The RHS has requested on their website than anybody seeing any signs of any stage of this moth fill in this report at http://apps.rhs.org.uk/surveys/submitrecord.asp?type=9

Clearly global warming and importation of unchecked plant material is going to be in the news for many years to come.

Many thanks go to Tim Norriss for providing photos of the adult and larval stage of this moth

With the forecast of a frost this morning I wasnt sure whether it was prudent or not to put out the trap. Its been a long winter so of course I did with an increase of moths,if that's not hyperbole, with Common Quaker 3, Oak Beauty 1, Small Quaker 2, March Moth 1,Grey Shoulder-knot - NFG & NFW 1 and possibly a first for the garden and new for website is a non confirmed Agonopterix heracliana 1.NFG & NFW - so 2 new moths in one day, excelllent

Beware of the actor moths, as twice I was caught out this morning by the last two moths mentioned above playing possum. I took some shots and put the GS-k  outside thinking the frost was too much and it was a gonner!! No chance,it took one look at me,smiled, and flew off. Worth an oscar!!!!

Very slow start

The weather is still impacting on the numbers of moths appearing at the garden moth trap and possibly, all the building going on about a mile away, where there was a massive farm, is surely not helping numbers, after all no food plants cover concrete.
Just one new moth for the year last night was a Hebrew Character in the company of 3 Common Quaker but I'm sure something will improve before too long.
Rather poor start as we are nearly saying goodbye to March.

I did as suggested put the trap out last night knowing it will be some time before its warm enough in the evening for another try.
Nothing special but still nice to see was Common Quaker 3, Small Quaker 2, and a rather drab Clouded Drab 1 that was not worthy of a photo.
Roll on next warm evening, cant be long, can it?
I did see a very small micro on the car door and another micro on the widow ledge but both vanished before I could check them out, ugh!!!

6 Months Break

I dont like winter and one of the reasons is written above as its in October that I last put out the trap and when it went mild in December I was busy with the website writing up the species pages which was about 250 species .At my age stopping is not a luxury its mandatory,a rule not to ignore lightly.

The weather as we all know has not been good for moths, albeit that we have enjoyed the sunshine, but last night I thought it was worth getting the moth trap out of its winter resting place, and was rewarded with a couple of moths this morning. The lovely Oak Beauty lives up to its name and the Small Quaker is just company.
Either way you look at it, its another start with possibly tomorrow night worthy of another try.At worst its a move in the right direction, one that I hope you will be taking before too long, if you haven't already.
