Last night with the temperature at 6c and with no rain forecast(its a miracle) I put the moth trap out but alas all I attracted was another Pale Brindled Beauty to the back door window.
As a new moth for the website I'm sure you will understand how delighted I was.
The moth is usually on the wing from January to March although here in the south the lifespan lasts a little longer from mid December into early April although of course like all "winter moths" recording them is dependent on the weather and I think all has been said about that.
The females are flightless having no wings where they can be found at the base of tree trunks.
The species is very variable including the melanic form f.monrcharia.
A very nice moth indeed.Click for larger images
