Description

Worldwide Distribution: W Europe : N Africa - Morocco
UK Distribution: Common throughout most of Great Britain,Isle of Man,Ireland : Most frequent north of a line between Severn to Humber : Channel Isles - widespread and frequent
UK Conservation Status -
Habitat: Heathland : Moorland : Rough Grassland : Fens : Shingle Beaches : Open Woodland
Similar Species -
Pupa: Pupates just below soil in loose cocoon
Overwinters as: Larva
Observations: The moth is easily identified by the light to dark grey or pale orange brown forewings with black shaped marks along the costa from base to median area are diagnostic.
The Shetland form E.g.f.edda Staudinger , [1892] has much darker greyish black forewings which make the moth similar to the Shetland form of the Ingrailed Clay D.m. ssp thulei - Staudinger [1892]
Pink forms are more common in western Britain and the orange -brown form occurs in Kent.
Moth attracted to light and flowers.
