Description
Wingspan: 35-40mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe: Temperate Asia
UK Distribution: Resident: Common throughout Southern Britain : Local through Midlands northwards,including mainland Scotland,Isle of Man : Ireland-Scarce : Channel Islands-Local

Habitat: Chalk Downlands : Open dry habitats with lighter easily drained soil : Coastal sand-dunes : Gardens

Pupa: Pupates in the underground cell
Overwinters as: Fully grown larva
Observations: Although this moth is similar in appearance to the Heart and Dart A. exclamationis it does not have the dark brown collar behind the head, giving an immediate difference to the two moths.
The two central markings tend to be "blunt and club like" as opposed to "dart like" giving rise to the differently named moths.
The forewings are broader and range in base colour for straw,through greyish brown to pale brown with wing flecking that ranges in intensity and colour between dark brown to blackish.
As shown above the male antennae is almost entirely feathered.
The moth is a regular to the light trap and is also attracted to sugar and flowers.
