Larva: The 43mm final instar larva are in various shades of light brown or ochre with fine light dorsal line edged with brownish grey and whitish subbdorsal line.Pale whitish band beneath the spiracular line.Head pale brown with pair of dark vertical stripes.Larva feed on wide range of grasses including maritime grasses.
Pupa: Pupates beneath soil
Overwinters as: Larva
Observations: A Nationally Scarce A species found adjacent to the sea on cliff tops and grassy slopes in Devon and Cornwall in south west England and Glamorgan and Pembrokeshire in southern Wales.
Specimens have been recorded in other counties like Hayling Island in Hampshire.
This moth is the only Wainscot with heavy brown markings and a blackish shoulder stripe on forewing with an unmarked white hindwing.
Variation in forewing background occurs with some forewing colouring tending to be yellowish brown.
The moth flies by night and is attracted to both light and sugar.
