Life Cycle Guide
Description
Wingspan: 34 - 40mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe - less Canary Isles,Estonia,Ireland,Norway, N & NW Russia and some Mediterranean Islands
UK Distribution: Recorded along south coast of England most years : Channel Isles - widespread and frequent as resident and immigrant
UK Conservation Status -
Habitat: Rough Grassland by sea : Cliff Edges
Similar Species -
Overwinters as: first instar larva
Observations: A fairly distinct Wainscot that is both a resident and immigrant from Europe, arriving in reasonable enough numbers to breed, the immigrant species topping up the resident species each year.Although they are not often found more then a mile inland it does appear to be extending its range northwards possibly as a result of global warming and stray singletons have been recorded inland.
The similar moth L.comma has a white forewing streak which extends into the basal area but doesnt form the letter "L" which gives this moth its name.
The moth is attracted to light, sugar and flowers.
