Life Cycle Guide
Description
Wingspan: 30-35mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe
UK Distribution: Immigrant : Mainly South and South-east England north to East Anglia : possibly established along the South-east coast.
UK Conservation Status -
Phalaena turca (Linnaeus, 1761)
Type Location -
Habitat: Being an immigrant mainly coastal but coming to light will be found in gardens.
Similar Species:-
Overwinters as: Early stage larva, but rarely found in the wild,so life cycle unsure
Observations: The White Point M. albipunctata can be easily confused with the Clay M. ferrago although the forewing background colour is orange-brown and the prominent white spots are more rounded. The hindwing colour tends to be grey.
The White-point is an immigrant arriving in two or more overlapping generations from the continent,a situation that has increased over the years and being an immigrant species is usually found near the coast, although as the photos below show, the moth also travels inland.
Numbers of the moths tends to vary year on year, presumably due to climatic conditions.
*The life cycle of this moth is not fully understood as the different life stages are seldom found in the wild.
The moth is a noctuid attracted to light and sugar and can be found after dark on grass heads.
