Worldwide Distribution: Europe - less Estonia,Latvia,Lithuania and few Mediterranean Islands : N Africa - Algeria
UK Distribution: SW,S England and Wales coastal region : E coast - rare : NW England,S Ireland,Isle of Man - recorded : Channel Isles - widespread and frequent as resident and immigrant

Overwinters as: Larva
Observations: The moth is an immigrant from southern Europe which arrives in sufficient numbers to be able to breed. Most appear in SW England,also along the southern coastal areas where they possibly also breed.It is now possible to see this moth inland. In some years this moth has been extremely abundant appearing in their thousands.
The moth has nicely marked darker cross lines against a pale brownish forewing,characteristics which clearly identify this moth from the Wainscots.
The moth is attracted to light and comes to sugar.
