Description
Wingspan: 32-40mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe - (excluding - Azores,Balearic Is.,Crete,Cyprus,Luxembourg,Madeira & Malta) - western side of Palearctic ecozone - Morocco : Turkey : Caucasus : Israel : Lebanon
UK Distribution: southern,south-western England and E Anglia - widespread and fairly well distributed : Wales,Midlands,Cheshire,Yorkshire and Cumbria - more local : Ireland - recorded from scattered localities : Channel Isles - widespread and frequent
UK Conservation Status -
Habitat: Marshes : Fens : Marshy River Banks : Canals : Ditches
Similar Species -
Pupa: pupates in cocoon made from plant litter
Overwinters as: Small Larva
Observations: Although difficult to separate the following gives guidance to small differences which aid in separating the above similar species. Common Wainscot - no straight termen or pointed apex, also missing postmedian line of black spots. Obscure Wainscot - has narrower forewing, more pointed apex and terminal row of black spots running parallel with termen.Shore,Devonshire Wainscot and Cosmopolitan - all have pure white hindwings as does the similar looking Reed Dagger whereas the Southern Wainscot has whitish ochreous hindwings.
Sugaring on reeds and flowering grasses attract the moth and also comes to light.
