Observations: A declining species formally widely distributed in England and Wales it is now found in south east England and the coast of south west Ireland. The subspecies from Ireland S.r.hibernica (Cockayne,1944) is much darker than the mainland species which is S.r.marginosa (Haworth, 1809) and is light brown and strikingly different to its cousin.
Although similar to the Feathered Gothic which flies later in the year and is separated by the white edged cross lines, inside of orbicular spot and outside the reniform stigmata.
The Gothic is larger and has a much broader more obscurely marked forewing.
The moth is Nationally Scarce A species and is a priority species under the UK Biodiversity Plan.
