Observations: Forewing is blackish or blackish brown with whitish or greyish markings the most distinctive of these being the dorsal blotch, centrally along the wing,which does not extend beyond the centre of the narrow wing.The forewing is sometimes heavily suffused yellowish brown,brown or yellowish grey where the markings can be obscure.
The similar species Z.griseana is a larger moth where the identifying dorsal blotch extends further than this moth almost as far as the costa.
The moth flies at dusk and is attracted to light.
