Description
Wingspan: 28-32mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe,eastwards to the Amur region of NE china-SE Siberia
UK Distribution: England & Wales - local but frequent north to Yorkshire & Cumbria : SW Scotland - more local : Ireland - widespread and local : Channel Isles - locally occasional

Pupa: Overwinters as a pupa in a cocoon on the ground
Overwinters as: Pupa
Observations: The moth is unmistakeable with its many fine radial lines across the wings which make it look as if the moth was in motion which is also the case when photographing this moth, giving a blurred appearance. The shape of the forewing is also diagnostic with a slight cutaway adjacent to the tornus.
Burnt, brown to dark brown markings are on all the wings at the trailing edge giving this moth its unique look.
When at rest the tip of the male's abdomen is upturned.
The moth is attracted to light and as such small numbers are found at the moth trap athough the moth is seldom found during the day.
Females are seldom seen, but are attracted to sugar.
