Description
Wingspan: 27-30mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe - excluding (Azores,Balearic Is.,Canary Is.,Corsica,Crete,Croatia,Cyprus,Greece,Madeira,Malta,Portugal,
southern Russia,Sardinia &Sicily) - eastwards to Japan & Kurile Islands
UK Distribution: Distribution mainly in two areas firstly,Hampshire extending into Dorset ,Isle of Wight,south Wiltshire,Berkshire,west Sussex and into Surrey. Secondly Bristol Channel,Severn & Wye,from north Somerset through Gloucestershire,and Monmouthshire and Hereford. Ireland - recorded from southen counties of Cork,Waterford,Limerick,Clare & Tipperary.

Habitat: Open Woodland in presence of Bilberry : Ride Verges: Long established Scrub

Pupa: Pupates in cocoon just below the soil where it overwinters

Observations: A Nationally Scarce species this moth is easily recognised by the small size,golden coloured forewings,double pointed hindwing and by wings being partially open when at rest.
The median band is a darker brown colour and a clear discal spot is visible on the hindwing.
Among forms for this moth is is f.fulva which is entirely dark brown.
The moth frequents areas with acid soils, like the moth shown below, which was found in an area where Bilberry was growing prolifically or along rides where Bramble is evident.
The moth is attracted to light but is usually found in vicinity of light trap.
