Description
Vernacular Name: Triangle-marked Roller
Wingspan: 14-18mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe - less Portugal,Ukraine and some of the Mediterranean Islands
UK Distribution: Southern England,north to Yorkshire and west to southern Devon & Cornwall,east Wales - common - possibly expanding its range
UK Conservation Status -
Habitat: Woodland : Hedgerows : Gardens
Similar Species -
Overwinters as: Larva
Observations: The two major defining features when identifying this moth is firstly the dorsal patch just before the tornus which is dark brown with red brown and either triangular or square in shape(moth below is triangular)and the 45º dark brown patch half way along the costa that is interrupted by the forewing ground colour just short of joining the dorsal patch.
From the base to the antemedial line is another brown area which is broken intermittently by the forewing ground colour of light brown.
The forewings are broad with hook-like crease towards the rear of the wings.
The moth flies from dusk and is attracted to light.
