Description
Wingspan: 29-32mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe - less Portugal,Greece,Croatia and most Mediterranean Islands : Siberia : Amur : Primorye : Sakhalin : Japan.
UK Distribution: Fairly well distributed in Southern England north to the Wash and Mersey,eastern Wales & central mainland Scotland : Northern England,southern Scotland and Ireland - very local : Isle of Man - infrequent resident : Channel Isles - one record from Guernsey only (MGBI)

Observations: The broad dark grey antemedian band is diognostic with this moth making it very easy to distinguish from any other species.
The forewing is ash grey with the basal area blackish grey. The cross lines which are highly diffuse tend to show more clearly along the dorsum.
The moth tends to vary in its markings with plain individuals sometimes tinged with creamy buff.
The hindwing is white with veined lobe in male.
The moth flies from dusk and is attracted to light.
