Description
Wingspan: 37-40mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe - less Russia & Asia Minor
UK Distribution: Great Britain,Isle of Man, Ireland, Scotland - well distributed : Channel Isles - Occasional
UK Conservation Status -
Habitat: Broadleaved Woodland : Hedgerows : Heathland : Moorland : Gardens
Similar Species -
Pupa: Pupates in a cocoon formed in the soil
Overwinters as: Ovum
Observations: This moth is a late autumn species which is fairly plain but can be distinguished from other "brown" moths by the subterminal line which is narrow and reddish brown edged with yellow. This subterminal line is straight just before the costa, where it is notched and is similar to the Red-line Quaker - Agrochola lota (Clerck, 1759) which has slate grey forewings and similar subterminal line. The Brick - Agrochola circellaris (Hufnagel, 1766)is similar to this moth but has a subterminal line which is not straight.
This moth also has the two black spots formed in the stigmata.
Like its similar species this moth is attracted to light and sugar and feeds on Ivy flowers and over-ripe berries.
