Description
Wingspan: 25 - 30mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe - less (Bulgaria,Luxembourg,N Russia & some Mediterranean Isles) : NW Africa to Central Asia
UK Distribution: Common throughout most of Great Britain : Channel Isles - Jersey - local / Guernsey - rare
UK Conservation Status -
Habitat: Grasslands : Fens : Gardens : Coastal Cliff : Sand-dunes
Similar Species -
Spiracles are black,prothoracic plate brown edged darker and a blackish brown head.
Pupa: Pupates in a cocoon among plant material or just below soil
Overwinters as: Larva
Observations: Although common over much of Great Britain the moth is a species of conservation concern under the UK biodiversity action plan.
The forewing is a mixture of hues in pink,reddish brown and grey and is extremely variable with specimens sometimes being fawn.
Cross lines tend to be bow shaped although the basal cross directly beyong the reniform stigmata line straightens out towards the dorsum,being a good pointer into identifying this moth.
Moth is attracted to light,sugar and flowers.
