Description

Worldwide Distribution: Western Europe to Russia, and Mid Scandinavia to the Mediterranean
UK Distribution: Found throughout Great Britain,appearing in greater numbers where Pine plantations are established

Similar Species -
Larva: The 20mm final instar larva is coloured orange to ruddy brown and has feint lateral lines.The larva can feed on Larch from hatching. Larva-end June to August
Pupa: Pupates in the ground
Overwinters as: Pupa
Observations: The moth forewing is suffused greyish brown and the cross lines are heavily marked and very distinct in dark brown as is the black elongated discal spots which are very prominent.The terminal area is darker than the forewing in dark brown and the subterminal fascia is lighter.
The fringes are chequered dark brown and light brown.
The hindwing has well marked greyish brown cross lines with a small greyish black discal spot.
The moth is easily disturbed during the day and is also attracted to the light appearing at the moth trap,often in good numbers.
