Description
Wingspan: 15 - 25m
Worldwide Distribution: Europe - less (Channel Isles,Portugal,S Russia, Spain & Mediterranean Islands ) eastwards to Japan and Kamchatka
UK Distribution: Resident and suspected immigrant : recent evidence of breeding in Northamptonshire,Warwickshire,mid Wales,Co Durham,Northumberland,Inverness-shire and Co Down in Northern Ireland.Thin scattering of records elsewhere in England,Wales and Scotland.

Observations: This moth is one of the largest of the Pugs, although variable in size,and very distinctive.
It has a broad forewing with clearly defined cross lines and two very large discal spots.The antemedian and postmedian cross lines are edged with black and finish at the costa as black patches and the subterminal line is white and dentate with grey shading on the anterior side.Cross lines continue on the hindwing. The terminal line is a series of black dashes.Grey shading across the wings and abdomen also occur in the basal area.
The moth is attracted to light in small numbers.
