Overwinters as: Ovum
Observations: The moth can be separated from the similar species E. porphyrana Hübner, 1799 by having a strongly marked basal area in black or blackish brown and in general is more variable.
The moth is extremely variable in the marbling on the forewing both in clarity and colour which ranges within blacks and browns.
The median band is whitish or whitish brown with a postmedial band in blackish brown and slightly concave blackish patch at the termen.
The moth can easily be disturbed during the day where it can be found on tree trunks and is attracted to the light trap.
