Description
Vernacular Name: Red-fringed Conch
Wingspan: 12-15mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe - excluding (Azores,Balearic Is.,Canary Is.,Channel Is.,Corsica,Crete,Croatia,Cyprus,Luxembourg,Madeira,
Malta & Portugal) : Asia Minor east to China (newly discovered)
UK Distribution: Local throughout most of Great Britain but very local north-west England

Habitat: Heathland : Moorland : Bogs : Chalk & Limestone Grassland
Similar Species -
Overwinters as: Larva in a cocoon
Observations: An easily recognised moth with its greyish white forewings and oblique cross band in reddish brown,edged with white, which starts at the dorsum at one third the forewing length finishing half way across the forewing at about half the forewing length before continuing to the costa as a suffused band. The terminal band is also the same colour and suffused from apex to tornus.
The similar species F.degreyana has a rosy red flush to the whitish-grey background with a narrower cross band.
The moth can be disturbed during the day,flies from dusk and is attracted to light.
