Life Cycle Guide
Description
Wingspan: 20-26mm
Worldwide Distribution: Palearctic Region : Europe excluding (Azores,Balearic Is.,Canary Is.,Crete,Cyprus,Madeira,Malta,South Russia,
Sardinia & Sicily)
UK Distribution: ssp albulata - England,Wales,Scotland including Hebrides and Orkney - widely distributed - lowland areas and coastal : Isle of Man - local & rare in north : Ireland - widespread - thinly scattered, mainly from east of N Ireland : ssp subfasciaria - Shetland only
UK Conservation Status - ssp. albulata ([Denis & Schiffermüller],1775) -
Habitat: Grassland, usually on calcareous soil : Coastal Shingle
Similar Species -
Pupa: Pupates in the soil overwintering until May/June
Overwinters as: Pupa
Observations: The ssp. albulata ([Denis & Schiffermüller],1775) is a species of conservation concern under the UK Biodiversity action plan both for England and Wales where it is found locally on calcareous grassland, sand hills and coastal shingle.
The ssp.subfasciaria (Boheman, 1853) is a small yellowish to brownish grey and is perhaps restricted to Shetland whilst the ssp.thules (Weir, 1880) which is possibly also found only in Shetland is possibly a darkened form of ssp.subfasciaria.
The English race has a white forewing background with grey-brown cross lines, although the intensity of these markings can vary, making it an easily recognisable moth.
The moth flies during the day and comes to light.
