Pupa: The pupa is formed head downwards within the larval food plant
Overwinters as: Ovum
Observations: Although similar to the Large Wainscot this moth can easily be separated by the subterminal black dashes or wedge shape markings. From the cross line in the median area which is cream with reddish brown edging a series of whitish vein markings finish at the termen.
The antemedian and postmedian cross lines are seen as a series of black dots.
The male is light reddish brown, sometimes much darker, making venation even clearer.
The hindwing on both sexes is creamy white with a suffused black band in the subterminal area.
On straw brown coloured forewings specimens a broader curved cream line follows the vention lines just inwards of the costa finishing at the black dashes.
The moths usually attracted to light and are found at the moth trap are usually wandering females and are found to be some distance from breeding sites. The moth does not feed.
