Description
Wingspan: 26-32mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe excluding(Azores,Canary Is.,Crete,Cyprus,Ireland,Madeira,Malta,Norway, N & S Russia) to Japan,Amur Region and Korea
UK Distribution: central Southern,south-eastern England & East Anglia - well distributed and frequent : south-west England and north to Lincolnshire,West Midlands,westwards to south Wales - local : Channel Isles - Jersey - Rare

Habitat: Open woodland scrub : Hedgerows : Fallow Land

Pupa: Pupates among plant litter
Overwinters as: Pupa
Observations: A very distinctive and easily recognised moth with its light brown to whitish costal band and black median band with the remainder of the forewing and hindwing light brown with a series of darker brown cross lines and bands. The terminal line is made up of a series of black dashes. Two discal spots are sitting in a centrally positioned cut out portion of the median band.
There is a slight variation in the ground colour,widths of bands and intensity of the markings.
The moth is attracted to light.
