Description
Wingspan: 29 - 36mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe - ( Excluding - Azores,Canary Is., Corsica,Crete,Cyprus,Ireland,Luxembourg,Madeira,Malta,N & S Russia and Sardinia)

UK Conservation Status -
Habitat: Reed Beds
Similar Species -
Pupa: Pupation site unknown
Overwinters as: Larva
Observations: The frequent forewing colour is grey and brown finely dusted with black towards the curved costa, sharply angled termen and pointed apex. The long narrow forewings overlap at rest towards the rear showing a black dotted sub terminal cross line. The silky white hindwings are also diagnostic. The f. wismariensis has wide black band along the forewing and highlights the stigmata and orbicular spot.
Although often found with similar species Chilo phragmitella they are easy to separate as the latter has a long labial palps.
Often attracted to the light trap sometimes some distance for its normal habitat.
