Worldwide Distribution: Europe : Urals : Krim : Asia Minor : Transcaucasus : Lebanon : C.Asia - Turkestan, Minussinsk, Djarkent, Irkutsk : Askold : Sakhalin : Japan
UK Distribution: Locally distributed throughout Britain but most common in the south-east - Local in north-west England and Scotland

Observations: The moth is similar to the following species, C.speculalis - Extinct in British Isles where it was found in Scottish Highlands only, C.osthelderi - extremely rare immigrant - One only seen in Britain from Kent, C.permutatella - Only Aberdeenshire & Perthshire ,nationally scarce ,recognised by a narrow white subterminal line.
The moth is possibly one of the easiest "grass moths" to recognise with a forewing that is light brown with a broadening white longitudinal streak bisected by a reddish brown at about half way along the forewing. The white streak towards the termen is edged with reddish brown and encapsulated in darker brown, forming a light brown wedge on the subterminal line.
The moth can be disturbed during the day and is attracted to light.
