Description
Wingspan: 40 - 44mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe (as immigrant) - less (Belgium,Channel Isles,Latvia,Luxembourg,Norway,E,n,& NW Russia,Netherlands) eastwards to most of Asia : Australia : Africa
UK Distribution: Southern England -twice only
UK Conservation Status -
Habitat: Meadows : Lower Oak Forest

Overwinters as: Pupa
Observations: An extremely rare migrant to this country with only two moths recorded up to 1980, a further nine records between 1981 and 2005 and an amazing twelve records in 2006 which is another indication of what we can expect with global warming.
The distribution of this moth ranges from southern Europe eastwards to most of Asia as well as being in Australia and Africa where it is fairly frequent. In Europe the moth migrates northwards as far as Finland.
Although at first glance this moth appears very much like a Passenger moth it is very clear there is a considerable difference between the two moths.
