Description
Wingspan: 22-30mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe excluding (Azores,Balearic Is.,Canary Is.,Corsica,Crete,Cypruss,Greece,Madeira,Malta,Portugal,Sardinia & Sicily) - eastwards to Japan,up to Korea and Sakhalin
UK Distribution: England,Wales,lowland Scotland,Ireland - well distributed and locally frequent : Channel Isles - local and occasional : Isle of Man - one single record

Observations: The central brown median band or "bar" is irregular in width and is pinched approximately half way across the forewing and diagnostic for this moth giving it the common or vernacular name.The anterior line of this bar is gently curved whereas the posterior side of the bar is irregular and dentate with both sides being highlighted in white.
The basal area is dark brown again edged in white and the subterminal line is white and wavy, also dentate.
The form albocrenata Curtis, 1828 has an intricately patterned frosted white toned appearance and is found in Scotland
Flies at dusk and is attracted to light sometimes appearing in high numbers.
