Overwinters as: Ovum
Observations: In P.r.rubiginata ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) the forewing is fairly narrow and rounded with white background and grey terminal band. The brown and grey median fascia is stunted at half way across the wing forming two blotches which start at the costa. Sometimes a small spot is adjacent to the dorsum.
In P.r.plumbata Curtis,1828 the median fascia is complete or nearly so at a reduced width after the costal blotches.
In P.r.plumbata semifumosa the forewing is dark grey with discernible media fascia with the hindwing being grey in extreme examples.
Flies at dusk and is attracted to light in small numbers.
