Pupa: Pupates in a cocoon at base of grass roots
Observations: One of the commonest grass moths to be found in grassland where during the day the moth rests on grass stems in a head down attitude where it is easily disturbed. The moth will come to light.
With a background colour that ranges between light brown and sandy brown(see photos below) this moth is easy to recognise being the only grass moth with two "C or V" postmedial silvery line markings and a series of black dots at the base of the termen.
The moth is single brooded between May and October in the south where the larvae feed on the roots of grasses like Cock's-foot.
