Habitat: Woodland : Heathland : Hedgerows : Dunes : Fens
Similar Species -
Spring females deposit eggs on bark or on branches whereas summer females deposit eggs on terminal shoots where the early instar bores into the buds.Later instar larva feed within terminal leaf, spun together with silk.
Pupa: Pupates within spun leaf or on the ground
Overwinters as: Second generation Adult
Observations: This moth can be confused with other species of Acleris shown above due to the highly variable wing pattern representing as many as 100 forms for the species. The wing patterns can be seen as either longitudinal or transverse or a combination of the two.
The forewing costa is curved from the base and straight from the middle to the apex, also with numerous small scale tufts near the middle of the wing which help in separating the similar species.
The male has no forewing costal fold.
The moth occasionally flies at dusk and is attracted to light.
