UK Distribution: Local on Dorset Heaths,Hampshire - some of the New Forest Heaths,Surrey - recorded single location,Lizard - Cornwall recorded on small heath @ Goonhilly Downs, other dotted records in Cornwall,Devon - reported from Haldon Moor (MGBI)
UK Conservation Status -
Type Locality -
Habitat: Damp acid heath where larval food plant flourishes - Cross-leaved Heath
Similar Species -
Pupa: Larval stage last from end July to end September before pupating in a cocoon beneath the soil for overwintering
Overwinters as: Pupa
Observations: The Shoulder-striped Clover can be distinguished from the Marbled Clover by the darker median band which is inward facing with this moth and horizontal with the similar species.Acid Heather is the required habitat for this moth where its larval food plant the Cross-leaved Heath is found. The Marbled Clover is much less likely to be found on this acid heathland.
The moth is olive brown with dark shoulder-stripes in the basal area,a dark inward facing median band and darker apial streaks and a clearly defined black dotted subterminal fascia.
Black spots in varying degrees is found over the forewing.
The moth found in Britain is ssp.warneckei Boursin 1964 and is endemic to Britain.
One female of the ssp bulgaria was caught in the Thanet,Kent and was considered to be an immigrant by Boursin,1964
With its specialised habitat the moth is considered rare and as such is covered under the red data book priority pre 1994.
