Habitat: Most lowland habitat types including,hedgerows : Gardens : Meadows : Urban areas : Woodland rides : Downland : Heathland : Moorland : Wetland habitats.
Similar Species -
Larva: July-Late June the following year : Overwinters as a larva on the larval food plant. The larva is light green with a series of whitish lateral lines on the top and sides with wider bands placed at each abdominal segment.The larvae are polyphagous feeding on plants from various families.
Pupa: Pupates in loose earth.
Overwinters as: Early stage larva
Observations: The Yellow Shell is a beautifully marked moth with variable ground colour ranging from yellow,yellow orange, to brown with brown and white numerous fine wavy cross lines across both forewings and hindwings.
The moth is represented in the British Isles by four subspecies which are the nominates species:-
C. b. atlantica-Shetland and Outer Hebrides-smaller than billiniata,yellowish brown,usually with strong bands and cross lines,sometimes with yellowish hindwing.
C. b. hibernica-West Ireland-similar size to billineata with brown forewing.
C. b. isolata-Blasket Islands, West Ireland-Dull blackish brown.
C. b. billineata-As described above.
The Yellow Shell is a resident moth thats flies at dusk but seldom comes to light.
