Description
Wingspan: 26-31mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe - less Greece,Ireland & most Mediterranean Islands : Middle East
UK Distribution: England - small numbers from scattering of sites in south,Isle of Wight,Cornwall & Devon to Kent,northwards to Leicestershire. Wales - present in eastern half : Channel Isles - local and occasional.
UK Conservation Status -
Habitat: Downland : Hedgerows : Field Margins : Sea-cliffs
Similar Species -
Overwinters as: Pupa
Observations: Moth is unmistakable when fresh with its dull pink to pinkish-brown forewings. The basal area is greyish with a wide black band face outwards. The median area is basically grey. The antemedian line is fairly straight,turning at 90º just before the costa and is edged with a dark black band facing outwards. The black postmedian line is fairly straight from the costa half way across the forewing changing to a scalloped line to the dorsum and is edged with a black band facing inwards just below half way across the forewing.The pale subterminal line is serrated.
The moth is a nationally scarce species having declined considerably since the 1940's.
The moth is attracted to light and occasionally sugar.
