Description
Wingspan: 45-52mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe - ( excluding - Azores,Balearic Is.,Canary Is.,Corsica,Crete,Cyprus,Greece,Ireland,Madeira,Malta,portugal,N Russia,Sardinia & Sicily) : Turkestan : Tien shan
UK Distribution: Scarce - recorded along the coasts of England and Wales,Hampshire and Isle of Wight in south along the east coast to Humber and Spurn Head in Yorkshire and Pembrokeshire to Anglesey on Welsh Coast.Inland recordings in Dorset and Hampshire where it has declined.

Observations: A Nationally Scarce B Moth under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan and is restricted to southern and eastern coastal sites and a few inland sites mostly occuring in Hampshire and Dorset.
The moth,one of the largest "Sharks" is well marked with the reddish brown and grey forewing which contrast well with the stigmata. The only similar looking moth is the Mullein which has an earlier flight time and has the stimata and orbicular spot missing.
Moth flies at dusk and is known to feed on plants like Evening Primrose,Red Valerian,Honeysuckle,Campions and Tobacco plants. It is also attracted to light where most of the singletons have been recorded.
