There are two distinct black subapial spots which partly name this species.
The moth hindwing is coloured in shades of grey, marked by a series of cross lines.
The moth is variable and in some instance the only practical approach to distinguishing the two species is by genitalia dissection.
The moth is easily disturbed during the day, flies from dusk and is attracted to the light trap.
