Life Cycle Guide
Description
Wingspan: 19-22mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe from Iberian Peninsula to Scandinavia, the Baltic States and east to Greece and Turkey.
UK Distribution: Resident. Local and thinly distributed in England,Wales,South-east Scotland and South-west Ireland. Probably under recorded due to its size and lack of appearance in light traps.
UK Conservation Status -
Habitat: Flower rich downland : Meadows : Roadside verges : Sea cliffs
Similar Species -
Pupa: Overwinters as a pupa in a cocoon underground
Overwinters as: Pupa
Observations: Although the similar species P.aurata at first sight could be confused with the Small Yellow Underwing there is no other micro moth with its brown forewing with zigzag antemedian fascia line and broad yellow band on the hindwings.
P.aurata has reddish forewings with golden yellow spots and the hindwing yellow band is far narrower.
The moth flies in sunshine where it is often found on its larval food plant white flower, Common Mouse-ear Chickweed, Dandelion, Buttercup and Common Daisy or settled on grass stems. (see photo 1)
