Description
Vernacular Name: Dark Pine Knot-horn

Worldwide Distribution: Europe to Russia
UK Distribution: Occasional Immigrant - Naturalised - common and widespread throughout the British isles and southern Ireland, around coastal region

Habitat: Gardens : Heathland : Conifer woodland
Similar Species -
Overwinters as: Larva
Observations: There are four species in the Dioryctria genus and all need very close examination to separate.This moth is silvery grey with mottled markings and a silvery grey cross-line at about one third from the base adjacent to a reddish patch.The subterminal line is dentate fro half way to the dorson as opposed to the similar species which has a single"dog tooth" marking before running smooth to the dorsum.Behind the antemedial line is a dark grey patch from the kidney shaped silvery grey spot to the dorsum.
Moth numbers are usually increased every year by migrants from mainland Europe.
The moth is attracted to light and is found often at the moth trap.
