Worldwide Distribution: Northern region of the Palearctic : Europe : SE Siberia : Korea
UK Distribution: Southern England-Well distributed : Midlands and Wales-local : Ireland-Very local,recorded in south west : Channel Isles-Jersey-Widespread and often seen-Guernsey-Rare

Pupa: Pupates underground in a cocoon
Overwinters as: Pupa
Observations: The moth is fairly unmistakeable with its white patch against a marbled brown or greyish brown forewing. A termen band which is greyish, blends toward the white patch before turning brown.
Any variation found with this moth will be slight.
The moth is a regular visitor to the light trap and occasionally is attracted to sugar
