Description
Wingspan: 22-25mm
Worldwide Distribution: England to Caucusus,east to Altai in Central Asia
UK Distribution: Southern and Eastern England to East Midlands & Lincolnshire - well distributed but low density : In decline in Hampshire : Western England & Wales north to Lancashire - thinly scattered : Channel Isles - Jersey - single recorded

Habitat: Damp places in Woodland : Fens : Hedgerow Ditches : Gardens
Similar Species -
Pupa: pupates in a cocoon among debris on the ground.
Overwinters as: Larva
Observations: This moth is easily recognisable with its scalloped termen, sandy coloured background and antemidaial and postmedial lines in black which line up with the same lines on the hindwing.There are black discal spots in the media area of both forewing and hindwing and within the median area is diffused black shaded marking on some species, as seen below.
The moth flies from dusk and is attracted to light where it can be found at the moth trap in small numbers.
The moth below was attracted by the lighting in a main road underpass.
Sadly the moth is a declining species.
