Description
Wingspan: 23-25mm
Worldwide Distribution: Central and Southern Europe excluding Iberian Peninsula : Near east
UK Distribution: Well distributed in London area,westward through Surrey & Hampshire,less so Kent,Sussex and East Anglia : South West England-rare : S E Wales-local : Channel Isles-Local
UK Conservation Status -
Habitat: Woodland : Downland : Gardens : Hedgerows
Similar Species -
Pupa: Pupates underground
Overwinters as: Larva
Observations: The moth is quite easily recognised by the postmedial cross line which is made up of a series of brownish spots and patches on the distal side. These spots tend to vary either as clearly defined spots patches which merge to virtually form a postmedial band as seen below.
The inner three spots are joined to the outer costal patch by the thin postmedial line.
The wings are off white to cream with a strongly marked discal spot on each wing.
The moth flies from dusk and is attracted to the light trap although I have found most settle on walls close to the moth trap.
