Observations: The moth tends to be quite variable between whitish and grey, with unclear cross-lines and bands on the forewing. This moth can be separated from its similar species the Lunar Marbled Brown Drymonia ruficornis (Hufnagel, 1766), which has an inverted comma mark on the forewing and clearly marked cross-lines and the terminal area is always grey.
There is a rare blackish form of this moth called f nigrescens Lempke which is often found in East Anglia.
The male moth is attracted to the light and appears in small numbers at the moth trap but the female is not usually seen.
The adult moth can sometimes be found during the day resting on tree trunks.
