Description
Wingspan: 19-21mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe : Near East : North africa
UK Distribution: Resident : England & lowland areas of Wales and Scotland-Reasonably well distributed : Channel Isles-well distributed and widespread

Pupa: Pupates in a cocoon in the ground
Overwinters as: Early stage larva
Observations: The common name of this moth clearly expresses why this is one of the easiest to recognise in the field, being light-dark grey with distinct central dot and a row of dots or dashes around the forewing and hindwing.
There are a series of cross-lines on the wings with the most pronounced being in the centre of the forewing in a darker grey than the background colour. Other cross-lines tend to be less clear or feint.
The general wing shape make this moth appear to come from the pug family but no other pug fits the colour of this moth.
The moth is attracted to light and as such can be found around human habitation close to any security light/house window etc.
