Description
Vernacular Name: Early Long-horn
Wingspan: 17mm/23mm.
Worldwide Distribution: Found in most of Europe - excluding (Azores,Balearic Is.,Bulgaria,Canary Is., Channel Is.,Corsica,Crete,Cyprus, Greece,Luxembourg,Madeira,Malta,Portugal,Sardinia,Slovenia & Sicily)
UK Distribution: Fairly uncommon and local throughout Britain, usually found in groups around the tops of Pussy/Common Willow located on heathland and fen.
In Hampshire I found them around Pussy Willow tops in the heathland area around Fleet Pond in late March.
UK Conservation Status -
Habitat: Heathland : Fens : Marshland
Similar Species -
Larva: The early stage larva live in the growing flower heads/catkins of the Salix specie before later feeding on the dropped flower heads and other Sallow leaf litter.
Observations: Another member of the fairy longhorn moths,the male have antennae which are white in appearance with black hair on their heads,whereas the female has black antennae with yellow/orange hair on her head.
As the photos below show in certain light conditions the moth appears, as the name suggests(cuprella),copper/bronz colour,whereas in other refracted light conditions it appears black.(see photo 3)
