Description
Wingspan: 26 - 31mm
Worldwide Distribution: Europe - less Bulgaria,Canary Isles,Channel Isles,Greece,Ireland and most Mediterranean Islands : to Siberia - Kamtschatka
UK Distribution: Recorded widely in S & C England northwards to Yorkshire : N & S Wales - recorded

Overwinters as: Larva
Observations: The life cycle of this moth is two years,possibly three and is best found in April on suitable habitats by checking the base of mature living stumps for small piles of frass although the moth is normally searched for with the use of today's modern pheromones.
This large species is similar to the Welsh Clearwing but has black anal tuft as opposed to yellow, a single yellowish abdominal band and lacks the inward facing mark on the reniform stigmata.The moth has a whitish band towards the tip of the antennae.
Searching for this moth with is best carried out in the middle of the day using the TIP pheromone lure.
