Observations: The male forewings and hindwings are the same silvery grey colour. The posterior tibia has tuft of hair which is a scent organ.
The female forewing is straw yellow with a rown of pink spots/blothches which run fron close to the apex forward towards base on dorsum side.There is also a pinkish subterminal line. Hindwing yellowish-grey with pinkish hue.
The subspecies H.h.thulensis Newman, 1865 male has highly contrasting markings with lines distinct but not always.
The nominate subspecies male rarely has any forms whereas the opposite is the case with the female.
Both sexes flight at night and come to light.
The males have a characteristic display called lekking at dusk and can involved a number of males swaying to and fro over one spot whilst releasing a goat-like smell which attracts the female, who flies directly towards the male, where they both fall to the ground.
