Description
Wingspan: Male - 26-31mm Female - 29-30mm
Worldwide Distribution: From Scotland to Cantabrian Mountains,and Balkans to north of Poland and eastwards to Siberia
UK Distribution: Restricted to Scotland at five or six sites on the Hebridean Islands of Mull and Ulva
UK Conservation Status -
Habitat: Grassy Slopes : Rocky areas near coast

Overwinters as: Larva sometimes overwinters twice
Observations: This Scottish subspecies Z.l.scotia differs from the nominate subspecies Z.l.loti which occurs around Vienna outwards to Romania and and southern parts of Ukraine, by the densely hairy body,legs which are marked brown instead of whitish and the forewing spots pinkish red.
Found on on the Scottish Hebridean Island of Mull and Ulva this moth is categorised as a Red Data Book 3 species, classified as rare, being only seen in 11-15 10km squares and is also on the Scottish Biodiversity List.
The red spot adjacent to the apex is the largest due to the joining together of two spots whereas the remaining four spots are usually separate.
The hindwing has a very narrow black border. The moth is highly variable across its range with many forms and subspecies listed.
