Worldwide Distribution: Europe - (excluding - Azores,Balearic Is.,Canary Is.,Corsica,Crete,Cyprus,Luxembourg,Madeira,Malta,Sicily & Slovenia) : Asia : Australia : New Zealand : North America
UK Distribution: Common throughout the British Isles although local in the north

Habitat: Lake & River margins : Ditches : Freshwater Ponds
Similar Species -
Overwinters as: Larva
Observations: A pale brown moth with a series of darker brown elongated spots edged in white occur as three at the antemedial line and two at the postmedial line. An indistinct darker brown line intersects these spots laterally, ending at the apex. The terminal line is formed with a series of dark brown dashes. Cilia are quite long and same background colour as forewing.
The moth is attracted to light sometimes appearing in good numbers at the moth trap.
