Similar Species -
Pupa: Pupates in cocoon spun up under host plant leaves
Overwinters as: Adult
Observations: With individual that are well marked there is a diagnostic button hole mark in centre of forewing which gives the moth its common name with the basal half of the forewing being much darker than the rest.
The Bloxworth Snout although being similar to Buttoned Snout has a more pointed and broader forewing with a white patch located along the costa adjacent to the median fascia extending towards the apex.
Nationally Scare species under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan the moth used to be widely recorded southwards below a line between South Wales and Lincolnshire but had declined since the 1940's although recent surveys for larva have shown it to be well distributed and locally frequent in parts of its range.
Moth is attracted to light, sugar and Ivy flowers.
