Similar Species -
Observations: Being endemic to Madeira this moth has under certain circumstances arrived both here in Britain and in the Netherlands, where it has become naturalised, with the common denominator possibly being plant in nature although the actual arrival is a mystery.The range of this moth in this country is expanding possibly due to the wide variety of food stuff eaten by the larva from dead insects to decaying vegetable matter.(see list below)
The moth is variably marked from a virtually plain straw coloured moth with no markings to one highly marked in dark brown with zig zag antemedian and subterminal cross lines.
The moth is readily disturbed during the day and is attracted to light.
